Peter and Jill welcome you to Royal Hotel, which is conveniently located in Naseby, a historic gold mining town in Central Otago, being a relic of the past and situated in a beautiful unique setting and located minutes from the Otago Central Rail Trail.
The Royal Hotel opened in October 1863 under the ownership of Andrew Morrison and Co. It was one of three hotels constructed when the town was shifted to its present site. It is the oldest remaining hotel, dating from a time when there were more than 22 hotels in Naseby and about 10 percent of the population were publicans.
Cobb n Co's horses were moved over to the stables at the Royal Hotel in March 1870 and the service was then run for many years by the proprietor at the time. Stables were built at the end of Earne St, where the Hotel cars now park.
The "New" Royal Hotel was opened in April 1879, and comprised of an additional wing of accommodation joining the original bar area. The frontage was re-clad in 10 inch rusticated weatherboards and had elaborate Victorian pilasters and entablature across the front. It now also had a separate door for guests to enter the premises. This was a first for Naseby and was well received by the ladies who found it embarrassing to walk through the bar to their lodgings. The Hotel frontage has been classified in Category B by the Historic Places Trust and it has been returned to its original Victorian wooden exterior.
The atmosphere of the Royal Hotel is an experience still much appreciated by locals and visitors alike - its spirit is always friendly, personal and informal. The ambience of the 150 years (in 2013) of hospitality is all around you.
It is a hotel for all seasons - in summer, in the shade of a large sun umbrella, it is easy to enjoy a cold Kiwi beer, a local expresso and homemade biscuits and cakes, or a chilled, award-winning Central Otago wine with an antipasto platter. In autumn and spring enjoy walking, biking or sightseeing in town and our museums and then spend late afternoon basking in the sun looking at the wonderful changing colours of the rowan and larch trees. Beer garden with playground for families available.
In winter enjoy a roaring open log fire in the bar, a glass of mulled wine or your favourite beer after a day’s curling, fishing, golfing or mountain biking.
